At Renouf Farms our varieties of
Haskap have a fresh raspberry/blueberry flavour with a
special zing found only in Haskaps. The plants grow well
in our climate and are the first fruit crop to ripen each
season (earlier than strawberries by a few weeks). The
plant is well behaved: it doesn’t sucker, has no thorns,
needs little pruning in early years and tends to fruit
when very young. We have been operating a you-pick berry
operation for over 20 years with Saskatoons and
Raspberries and we are excited to add Haskaps to the
orchard. Extensive research indicates that the flavour and
health benefits may create a very high demand for these
berries and we plan to be there to satisfy that demand. We
have them packaged frozen year round as well as Haskap
Jam, Haskap Pie Filling, Haskap Topping and Haskap Puree.

This chart shows the comparative ripening times of the different fruit varieties in Saskatchewan. We have found with our 7 Haskap varieties we are picking from the first week of July to the middle of August and the Saskatoons from third week of July to the end of the first week in August. Of course Mother Nature can always change these dates! |

Journal of Functional FoodsThe potential health benefits of HASKAP berries (Lonicera caerulea L.): Role of cyanidin-3-O-glucoside:Haskap (Lonicera caerulea L.), an emerging commercial fruit crop in North America, has been known for its medicinal benefits by the people of Russia, Japan, and Northeastern China for centuries. The vitamin C content in haskap berries, ranging between 29 and 187 mg/100 g, is significantly higher than in other vitamin C rich sources such as oranges, strawberries, and raspberries. Cyanidin-3-O-glucoside
(C3G) is the major anthocyanin present in haskap
comprising about 79–92% of its total anthocyanin content
and over 60% of the total polyphenols. Considerable
evidence shows significant antioxidant,
cardio-protective, anti-inflammatory, neuroprotective,
anticancer, and anti-diabetic properties of C3G-rich
haskap preparations and C3G alone both in vitro and in
vivo.
